Round three between the Valencia Flyers and the Fresno Monsters turned out to be an exciting, high scoring, rough and tumble affair ending up in an OT Loss for the Flyers after coming back from three goals down.

The scoring started off early as Fresno scored just 31 seconds into the hockey game, after a long shot by Michael Freeman was deflected by Mike Fabie past Flyers Goalie Jake Ireland.

Score remained at 1-0 throughout the first period until Flyers Captain Austin Ehrlich evened the game at one on his sixth goal of the season after picking up his own pass and jamming it in behind Austin Piquette with 22.4 left of the clock.

The tie did not remain tied for long as Fresno regained the lead with 7.1 seconds to go after a long dump in by Michael Freeman bounced off Ireland’s pads and landed on the stick of Fresno’s leading scorer, Mike Nolan, giving him his eighth goal of the season and Fresno a 2-1 lead heading into the second.

The second period fireworks started off quickly when Justin Plate found the back of the net on a Fresno powerplay with Jason Hart off for tripping, giving the Monsters a 3-1 lead. Fresno extended the lead to 4-1 on another powerplay goal, this time on a long shot by Anthony Pena, his first of the season.

This is when things began to get interesting. With the pay inside the Flyers zone in the left wing corner, Fresno forward Mike Fabie crosschecked Flyers defenseman Bas Assaf head first into the boards, creating a huge scrap involving all 10 skaters on the ice. Nine penalties in total on the play as Fabie was given a major and game ejection from checking from behind, Nik Giers and Dan Fitzegrald were given majors for fighting, Jordan Fontaine a game ejection for third man in, and ten minute misconducts for jakob Kranabetter, David Min, Bas Assaf, and Michael Freeman, totaling in 75 minutes in total on the play.

The Flyers were the beneficiary of the scrap, receiving a major power play and they were able to capitalize early on a goal by Luc Whyte after Zach Paxman created a turnover which allowed Adam Papayoanou to get the puck and feed Whyte in front of the net to shorten the lead to 4-2.

The Flyers were then given a 5 on 3 power play as Jelenski off the ice for tripping and were able to capitalize when a long shot by Sam Taferner found the back of the net, making the score 4-3.

The Flyers then capitalize on another poweplay late in the second when a long shot by Nik Giers bounced off the back boards out to the front and Luc Whyte was able to push the puck across the net to Zach Paxman who buried it in the back of the net, evening the score at 4-4.

The Flyers then took their only lead of the game seven minutes and forty seconds into the third on a goal by Nik Giers after a great pass by Austin Ehrlich which was his 20th point in 18 games versus the Monsters.

The lead did not last as the Monsters were able to get a goal after a neutral zone turnover by the Flyers let Evan Ingram bring the puck into the zone and beat Devin Day over the glove side to tie the game.

The overtime period was not very action packed, as only one shot was recorded. It happened to be that the one shot produced the only goal when Evan Ingram stripped Sam Taferner of the puck and walked out in front, beating day past the right pad to end the game 6-5 in favor of the Monsters.

Notes: The Flyers next game is not until November 1st at 7:15PM when they host divisional rival Ontario at Ice Station Valencia. The game will be covered live on fasthockey.com, with the pregame show starting at 7PM.
